The things people get wrong
How many shifts is 88 days?
Days are counted full-time. If full-time at your job is 5 days a week, each shift is worth 7 รท 5 = 1.4 calendar days, so 88 days takes about 63 shifts. But you can't finish in less than 88 calendar days from your first shift, however many hours you do. Days off inside that stretch count as long as you were working full-time hours around them.
Do rain days and sick days count?
Paid sick days and public holidays count. Unpaid days never do. A rain day counts if you were paid for it, which usually means you're on an hourly rate, not piece rate.
Does piece rate count?
Yes, as long as it's a lawful piece rate agreement and you're earning at least the award's hourly floor. The hours you actually work are what matter, keep your own record.
Does volunteering count?
Only bushfire recovery and flood, cyclone or severe weather recovery, in the declared areas. Any other unpaid work, including WWOOFing and work for board, never counts.
Bar and hospitality work?
It counts in northern Australia and in remote and very remote areas, for work done from 22 June 2021. That covers Cairns, Airlie Beach, Darwin, Broome, the Kimberley and most of Queensland north of Rockhampton. It doesn't count in Brisbane, Byron, Melbourne or Sydney.
Can I do all my days with one employer?
Yes, as long as the work counts. The six month limit per employer is a separate rule, and most specified work in regional Australia is exempt from it. Check the exemptions before you turn down a longer season.
What proof do I need?
Payslips for every week, and the employer's details for the form. Home Affairs can ask for group certificates, bank records and a reference. Keep the lot, the tracker in this app stores it for you.
